The MINDCODE method is a NEW approach to smoking-cessation. Most other smoking-cessation methods focus either on the conscious mind or the unconscious mind and, unfortunately, deliver limited success as a result. The MINDCODE method is a whole-mind approach to stopping smoking and as a result is most highly effective.
The MINDCODE Method borrows elements from cognitive behavioural therapy, that work with the conscious mind, as well as insights from advances in behavioural science, and combine them with breakthrough techniques that allow us to very quickly and effectively make behavioural changes with the unconscious mind.
The MINDCODE program is designed around a deep understanding of the smoking habit and is a result of several years of experimentation with various methods and insights from feedback from a vast number of clients. It works! And it can work for you too!
To understand how MINDCODE works it’s useful to have a basic understanding of the workings of the human mind. We have one mind, however one’s mind works on two levels; the conscious and unconscious.
The unconscious mind is the automatic mind and is programmed from birth to respond automatically to the world, in five ways; through repetition, through peak emotional experiences, direction from authority such as parents and teachers, a desire for identity and through our imagination.
You can think of the unconscious mind as the automatic pilot of the mind. It runs the things we don’t need to think about, including our breathing, heartbeat and immune system, as well as our automatic emotions and our habits, both good and bad habits. The right-brain left-brain model in psychology suggests that the right side of the brain is the seat of the unconscious mind.
And we also have a conscious mind. It is the part of the mind where we tend to live. It is whatever we are aware of in any given moment. We think, we make decisions, and we are motivated to act on those decisions with our conscious minds. The right-brain left-brain model suggests that the left side of the brain is the seat of the conscious mind.
Both levels of mind are contributing their part to the smoking habit and so to stop smoking permanently both levels of mind must be attended to. Each level of our mind has a different mind language, a different code, if you will. And this is the basis of the MINDCODE approach. It is a whole-mind approach to stopping smoking.
Since the unconscious mind is the automatic mind, it’s the mind that runs the smoking habit and it also generates the craving to smoke. Smokers feel they NEED to smoke because they have cravings. The only thing preventing someone who really wants to stop smoking easily, from being able to do so, are cravings.
The conscious mind is the thinking-mind and is where one’s perception of smoking resides, the idea that smoking is enjoyable or beneficial. And this is where one’s motivation or WANT to smoke is generated.
The vast majority of smokers start smoking at a young age. When a youngster starts smoking they don’t have unconscious cravings. They have a strong motivation to smoke, based on their conscious perception that smoking is cool or that they will be cool. That motivation is so strong that they force themselves through the unpleasantness of starting smoking.
For the unconscious mind to form a habit all we do is to practice it, making use of conscious repetition. The unconscious mind trusts that if we are consciously choosing to repeat something that it must be important to us and our survival. And so an unconscious craving is generated at those times that smoking is repeated.
And so adult smokers have both an unconscious NEED to smoke, based on unconscious cravings through repetition in the past, and a conscious motivation or WANT to smoke, based on their perception that smoking is enjoyable or beneficial in some way.
In order to stop smoking permanently one has to change one’s unconscious habit of smoking, and the resulting craving, as well as change one’s positive perception of smoking, and the resulting motivation to smoke. When a person that has successfully stopped smoking relapses, they made a conscious decision to smoke again, because they had not yet completely changed their conscious perception of smoking.
Most smoking-cessation methods and books focus primarily on the conscious mind. The foundation of these methods is using conscious willpower to train in a new unconscious non-smoking habit through repetition, which takes time and can, of course, be very challenging.
Other methods, such as NLP and hypnosis, focus primarily on the unconscious mind. These methods are very effective at removing unconscious cravings, but, of course, they don’t remove the conscious motivation to smoke. And so, after hypnosis one can still decide to smoke, if that is what one wants to do.
The MINDCODE method is different from other methods. We work with both levels of mind, by combining the best of both approaches, to make your transition to a freer healthier lifestyle as easy as possible!
Firstly, the pieces of the smoking puzzle are systematically revealed to your conscious mind, changing your conscious perception of smoking, so that you are able to see the truth of smoking the way that a non-smoker does. The goal is to increase your conscious motivation to stop smoking, so that you WANT to remain a non-smoker for life.
Secondly, we communicate with your unconscious mind. The five ways in which the unconscious mind is naturally programmed can be self-directed, meaning that the unconscious mind receives its direction from the conscious mind. Using techniques derived from NLP and waking hypnosis, we appeal to the unconscious mind to cease the smoking habit and adopt a healthier way of living.
Lastly, we practice a breathing technique. Unfortunately, most smokers that stop smoking experience a 3-day nicotine detox. The effect of the detox can include a sensation of anxiety. Fortunately, with the assistance of the unconscious mind, the detox effect can be completely overridden, or at the very least drastically reduced. And the breathing technique assists in alleviating anxiety, within a few breaths.
Following the session, if you are not finding it easy, you have telephonic support for a period of 7 days. This is to ensure that you do successfully make it through the detox period without smoking.
Traditionally, the leading theories of therapy viewed behaviour change as an event, such as quitting smoking or drinking, or overeating. However, more recently, behaviour scientists have investigated the structure that underlies behaviour change and found that people move through a series of stages when changing behavior.
They found that people that go through a particular process to make a behaviour change are more successful than those who don’t. That process is called the Trans-theoretical Model or simply the Stages of Change.
While progression through the Stages of Change can occur in a linear fashion, in real life circumstances a nonlinear progression is common. Often, individuals recycle through the stages or regress to earlier stages from later ones, due to the fact that people often do not succeed in maintaining changes in their lifestyle.
The key prinicple that facilitates progress and prevents relapse is decisional balance, which is a comparative weighing-up of potential gains and losses from making the change. Simply put, for someone to stop smoking permanently the cost of continuing to smoke must, at least in their own mind, outweigh the cost of stopping smoking. And similarly, the benefits of stopping smoking must outweigh the benefits of continuing to smoke.
When decisional balance is weighed in favour of stopping smoking the whole process becomes a lot easier. The MINDCODE method is designed to assist you to achieve your decisional balance in favour of stopping smoking and staying stopped.
Isn't nicotine a drug like heroin?
Humans have been aware of and used the known psychoactive plant poisons like marijuana, cocaine from the cocoa leaf and heroin from the poppy flower for thousands of years. And nicotine has never been sold on the street as a drug. Nobody would buy it, because you can’t get high from it. In fact it is quite unpleasant to consume nicotine. If a non-smoker, without a tolerance to nicotine, were to use a nicotine patch, within a short period of time they would experience the side effects of poisoning, including elevated heart rate, nausea and anxiety.
Most people know about the plant poison arsenic. Nicotine is the protective plant poison of the tobacco plant and it is in fact three times more toxic than arsenic.
Isn’t nicotine physically addictive?
Their work was published in 2002 and it was open to peer review, so the scientists that did those more than 700 experiments had an opportunity to defend their work. And they didn’t get a single response from the scientific community. They received one response, from The Addiction Journal, questioning their funding.
Interestingly there are a number of experiments proving that nicotine is not addictive. In studies in which nicotine is introduced directly into an ex-smokers body, bypassing the structure of the smoking habit, not one person started smoking again. And in studies in which ex-smokers smoked nicotine-free tobacco cigarettes many started smoking again, because it is the structure of the smoking habit not an addiction to nicotine.
Is smoking really just a habit?
Most compulsive behaviours express themselves through a physical craving, including “addictions” to watching television and playing internet games. Almost any behaviour that is repeated consistently, where there is also an anticipation of a reward from the behaviour, will eventually develop a physical craving.
Prior to 1993 the definition of compulsive behaviours was quite distinct from the definition of addictions. The word addiction used to refer to a substance dependency. Now the word addiction applies to any behaviour that is repetitive in nature over which we feel we don’t have control. No substance required.
What is a craving?
The reason most of us don’t have a craving for driving a car, is because there wasn’t that anticipation of a reward from driving when we learned to drive, that there was from smoking when we learned to smoke.
An unconscious craving is a physical sensation in the area of the abdomen. It can be described as an empty feeling that needs to be filled. It is often referred to as a physical urge to do something. It usually lasts 3 to 5 minutes and if one is distracted by something else, it simply disappears.
Smokers use the word cravings to describe detox symptoms, desirable conscious thoughts of smoking as well as actual unconscious cravings and the reason that they do this is they are all impulses to smoke. The three impulses are distinctly different and require different solutions and that’s why there are three parts to the MINDCODE session.
Will I experience withdrawal symptoms afterwards?
Smoking “withdrawal symptoms” are a combination of detox symptoms, desirable conscious thoughts of smoking as well as unconscious cravings. The extent to which a smoker experiences one or all of these varies from person to person. The MINDCODE method is designed to address all three of these smoking symptoms.
Most smokers that stop smoking experience a 3-day nicotine detox. The effect of the detox can include a sensation of anxiety. Fortunately, with MINDCODE the detox effect can be completely overridden, or at the very least drastically reduced.
And the breathing technique that is included in the MINDCODE program assists in alleviating anxiety. So the breath will be your tool. However, if it’s not as easy as you think it should be there is seven-day telephonic support following your session.
What is a relapse?
The Trans-theoretical model of change includes Relapse as one of the stages one goes through on the journey to stopping smoking permanently. It takes one back to the contemplation stage in which one can convince oneself of the merits of stopping smoking permanently. A relapse should be seen as a part of the process of stopping smoking permanently, as long as one learns from the experience it is not a failure.
Stopping smoking permanently can be compared to ending a toxic relationship with another human being. Occasionally after ending a relationship a couple will get back together, only to be reminded of why they ended the relationship. Usually after that the break-up is permanent.
Craig Evans, the principal of the MINDCODE practice, initially began helping his clients quit their smoking habit primarily using hypnosis.
With time Craig noticed a corresponding pattern with clients that struggled with thoughts of smoking after their hypnosis session and those that relapsed after some time. Many of those same clients experienced no physical withdrawal symptoms.
A search for an answer through the literature ensued. A number of books and articles provided pieces to the puzzle, but there were pieces to the smoking puzzle that were either missing or didn’t make sense.
And so through a number of years of feedback from clients, as well as continued reading through various fields, Craig discovered the missing pieces of the smoking puzzle. And the MINDCODE method evolved into the highly effective program it is.
Craig is a licensed Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Ericksonian Hypnosis and is an expert in the area of smoking cessation. He completed his NLP training in London with Dr Richard Bandler, the founder of NLP, and is a member of the Society of Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
Craig furthered his studies in the application of NLP and hypnosis to smoking cessation through Clinical Hypnotherapist and trainer, David Botsford, also based in London. David developed a very successful smoking cessation method that consistently delivers results within one session.
Craig is also a member of the South African Institute of Hypnosis (SAIH) and is trained and certified in the SAIH smoking cessation approach. In addition Craig is trained through SAIH in the complex hypnotherapy technique of Parts Therapy. Craig is certified as a Parts Therapy Facilitator through the Charles Tebbetts Foundation, based in the USA.
On my way home after my session on Saturday I thought that this is too easy, how can this change 17 years of smoking. I kept my cigarettes in my bag, because at the time I didn’t feel like a cigarette, so I was waiting to feel like one.
Well it’s now been 5 days since my last cigarette and I still have not felt like one so I have thrown the packet away and I feel great!

I smoked for 22 years and Leon smoked for about 28 years or so. We thought we would never be able to stop, as we had tried stop smoking gum and prescription pills, to no avail, but your method worked from the moment we walked out of your office.
People that knew us, as smokers, are amazed and we find ourselves telling colleagues, friends and family how we did it and they cannot believe that it was that easy. Well, we must admit, we also didn’t think it was that easy a month ago when we drove to your office – all I kept thinking was how hard this will be and we must just stay motivated, but it wasn’t difficult at all!
The first few days we would chat to each other and tell each other whenever we had had a ‘moment’ – a situation that would remind us that that would’ve been a time we would’ve lit up. Also, when the actual desire would arise to light one, we would just do the breathing exercise like you explained and yes, that definitely helped – but those moments would be far and few apart. Now, a month later, we have to remind ourselves that we even smoked – how funny is that! All our friends are proud of us!

The second session was incredibly powerful. I just stopped instantly with very little desire to smoke at all. There were very few cravings and I did not have to use very much willpower at all.

Writing this email took longer than I planned. I think a part of me kept wanting to wait till I reached a milestone. And then when I reached it I was surprised and thought “Better wait and see first” ha-ha
But Craig, it’s been 1 month and 11 days since I had a cigarette. I remember crying in your office when you offered me one and subconsciously feeling really sad to lose my “best friend”. I honestly thought at first that I was saying no out of politeness! I even tried to smoke that night but my mouth wouldn’t “work”!
Instead in these 42 days I have started Muay thai training, running and belly dance, gave up caffeine and bread and feel better than I have in at least 8 years. From pack a day smoker for 17 years to runner in 42 days!
I do still think about smoking. The emotional connection was strong! But each time I successfully make it through a trigger I feel even stronger.

Overcoming the actual physical addiction to nicotine may be relatively easy and may only take a few days; while stopping the deeply ingrained habit of smoking is far more difficult and usually takes years. Hypnosis may be an effective way of giving up smoking by accessing the subconscious mind and reinforcing the message of wanting to be a healthy non-smoker.
Although this may sound rather esoteric, most smokers serious about giving up smoking surely would like to make this transition as easy as possible and should therefore consider the help of hypnosis. In a nutshell it has been 6 weeks and my friend is still not smoking…

I hope this email finds you well. Since my session with you, I have not had a cigarette and I do not suffer the cravings for any either. However, I do still feel like I miss certain cigarettes that I used to have, “the important ones”. So trying to find something else to replace them has been a bit difficult. It feels like I want one, because I miss it, but I cannot seem to bring myself to actually do it. Does that make sense? So I am in a catch twenty-two, but I know better than to pick one up and light it.
I am very fortunate to have a boyfriend that also decided to quit the same day as my session to support my decision to quit. That unfortunately has led to unnecessary arguments and short tempers, as he has all the cravings that I do not seem to have. I have suggested countless times for him to book a session with you, to help him with his cravings, but like you said, it’s a decision one has to make on their own (I hope he makes it soon, he’s driving me mad).

It’s been 3 months after our session and I’m still a non-smoker. Being healthy is the best present I could have given myself.
Every now and then a very tiny craving hits me out of the blue, but then I just do the breathing and swoosh thing and it’s gone again quicker than it came.
So, thank you for giving me the tools for this.

I’m on at day 8 and completely smoke free!!! Thank you thank you thank you! It has been so much easier this time round after the Parts Therapy. Feeling fantastic and making better decisions about everything. It seems like all the little parts have come to an agreement and are after the same thing. Been doing my breathing exercises and when a small craving has reared its ugly head I’ve breathed easily through it. I think I might just be smoke free for life… Finally I believe it.

Many thanks for not only putting an end to my smoking, but my wife quit the afternoon after I saw you and we have been smoke free since September, too boot we have completed our first two long-distance trail runs and will be tackling our first multi-day stage race in May. It feels great to be a non-smoker and I am dead sure it would not have been possible without your help!

Just to let you know that the penny dropped yesterday, hooray!!!! As soon as I woke up, I just knew that I was a non-smoker instead of a smoker trying to give up.
On Tuesday afternoon after lunch we carried on socialising back at ours and I have to say I was panicking on the drive back as this would normally be the time I would be looking forward to getting home for a cigarette (as I never took them out with me) and I was. I was so angry with my husband and my sister in law for not making it easy for me to just light up.
Then yesterday I never even thought about anything to do with smoking or quitting. In the evening we met up with friends in a smoking bar, I had a cigarette in my bag just in case and like the day before, that situation would have been a trigger, but I was absolutely fine, nothing registered. One of our smoking buddies was smoking close by, it was not a problem, nothing registered.
I am so excited, I feel like I have been reborn. I feel so confident and so free and so strong. Thank you Craig.
I truly believe that the telephonic support was vital to my success. When you reassured me that the session had worked and that my initial struggle was something else entirely, which you helped me with as well, I had belief in what you were telling me. Without the after support I would have been confused and just accepted that it hadn’t worked and gone back.
I hope you are well. I just wanted to give you some feedback after Christo and my session with you in February. Since then we have not touched a cigarette and are extremely happy to be non-smokers.
You mentioned you were busy with a weight loss program. Could you perhaps share some info regarding this?
Hope all is good on your side of the world. I am happy to let you know that the second session has been successful and I am well on my way! I still have the occasional thought about smoking, but it’s becoming less and less and I can manage it quite easily.

Hope you’re well… Just wanted to let you know that I’m doing well!!! Today is day 5 as a non-smoker. I’m so strong in the days, but I’m still having a few battles at night.
It’s like the trigger of sitting outside on my deck having a cigarette at the end of the day is so strong! I almost feel like something is missing, like I haven’t finished my day properly! Do you think I should have a follow up with you?
Today is day 9 and I’m strong! I’m feeling great and I’m loving the freedom of being a non-smoker.
The thing I’ve noticed is how much more time I have in the evenings. I do still think about that last cigarette of the day, but I absolutely know that I’m not going to have it…

Just to let you know that I am doing so well after the session yesterday. I was weirdly emotional and tearful last night, but am much better today.
My mom is a smoker and is staying with me for two weeks and I feel no interest whatsoever to join her in a smoke.

We made it to day seven. Claudette and I have been each other’s support and it has been going great.
There have been times when the thoughts were there to smoke, but strangely it just disappeared.
The breathing exercise has been absolutely amazing. So thank you from both of us.

I came to see you quite some time ago because I wanted to stop smoking. I am very happy to say that I have never touched a cigarette since that day and can’t imagine ever smoking again.
I am struggling with my weight and seem to eat anything and everything that is not good for me.
